Our hotel was on Staten Island, which is across the bay from Manhattan (both are part of New York City). To get to Manhattan the DoT run a FREE ferry service, which runs every 30 minutes or so, and passes straight by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and gives fantastic views of downtown Manhattan. Many tourists take the ferry back and forth simply for the view. This time of morning it was mostly commuters on the ferry who didn’t look outside at the views the entire journey.One reminder that we were in New York City as the Coast Guard escort that our ferry had on its journey this morning. We assumed it was commonplace, but we didn’t see another escort on our other 7 times on the ferry.
Today it was very foggy, and we couldn’t see very far at all. We could still see the Statue of Liberty, and it was exciting watching the buildings of downtown Manhattan loom out of the mist.
