As we crossed over the Manhattan Bridge, we got some great views of the Brooklyn Bridge, just to the South. We also got some better views from the Brooklyn side too.

Construction began in January 1870 and it was completed thirteen years later and was opened for use on May 24 1883. A rumour circulated that the bridge was unsafe, so a dozen elephants were brought in from a nearby circus and walked back and forth across the bridge until it did collapse ... No, no, until people were convinced of its safety, and eventually over 150,000 people crossed it on that day. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the US, and on completion, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.
