There are some great exhibits here, and pride of place goes to the Enigma, the German code machine from the second world war. There are actually some working versions here available for use (in case you have a need for this type of code).
Like everything else in the area, there is a Civil War angle, including this original cypher from the losers.
The kids did a scavenger hunt through the museum, along the way learning a heap about the history of codes and codebreaking, without getting too much of a biased view of it all.
Some of the computers were huge, and the system above had a version in Brisbane as part of a worldwide network of speech intepreters into the latter part of the 20th century.
