And here it is. The water is very cold, so we paddled around and then set to putting the beach to good use.
This beach is Cape Henlopen, a State Park. The section of beach we chose is also a surf fishing beach, on which you can drive (if your car is a 4WD!).
I'm told that at the height of summer, the vehicles are parked closer than a parking lot. Today, we had plenty of space.
The family next to us took their beach trip seriously and their dad dug this moat for his kids to play in. They needed help, so ours joined in.
I should mention that we saw plenty if dolphins swimming about. We also saw several sharks being caught (each about a foot long), sting rays and lots of crabs.
After we'd had enough of the beach (about 4 hours worth), we headed towards "civilization" and Rehoboth Beach where one is supposed to go to swim and enjoy the beach. 
Incredibly crowded by our standards and no parking within a sensible walking distance and this is early in summer! The shops were of more interest.
And this shop definitely caught the kid's attention!
We also visited the outlet stores at Rehoboth, but there wasn't too much new (we have Potomac Mills nearby which is one of DC's major tourist attractions).
Time to head home back across the Chesapeake Bay bridge (known as the Bay bridge). This bridge is notorious for massive traffic jams and backups that can add hours to the trip. Choosing a Tuesday, we had no traffic issues, but I can imagine that on major holidays and weekends, it would be a nightmare (our trip was about 2.5 hours each way).
