North of DC, just outside the Beltway, is a set of falls on the Potomac River called Great Falls, which also has a picnic park etc. This afternoon we paid Great Falls a visit, only to find the lowest flow in decades (apparently we're in near drought conditions in the area, but it's all relative - all the lawns are still green here!)
You can see how high the water does get here. This post is well above the viewing platforms, so you can see how much the flow of the Potomac varies.
Today there were a group of kayakers surfing on a standing wave and we watched them for a while. The longest anyone lasted was 15 seconds. No one paddled down the falls today, there was not enough water.
