Just across the Potomac River from Washington DC is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. And right at the end of the runway is Gravelly Park, where there are some Rugby fields and a large car park, providing easy access to the Mt Vernon Bike Trail. My mate Bobby sometimes referees rugby games there and tells me that players with free kicks wait for planes to fly in, so they can make use of the slipstream.
You feel you can reach out and touch the planes they are so close.
The main runway also aims straight for the White House which planes are not allowed to fly over. So, they follow the Potomac, and at the last minute bear hard right and come in and land.
Or if taking off in that direction, they bank barely after their wheels have left the ground. It is an amazing manouvre to watch, from almost anywhere in DC (and even scarier to experience if you're not expecting it). It is an incredibly busy airport, and very convenient as it has its own Metro stop. It is much closer to home than Dulles (or BWI).
After the bike ride, Gemma and I hung around for a while and watched the planes take off and land.
