This week opened with the terrible news of the events at Virginia Tech http://www.vt.edu/, only a few hundred miles from here. I found out, while looking at the Australian Newspaper website during a break at work. I mentioned it to my cubicle buddy, whose face went white and he rushed out to call his son who is a student down there (he's OK). That brought home to me how close this is to all of us. Our visitor from last week Janna, and her husband were also students at VPI as it was then. So few degrees of separation. Many of those who perished were locals from this area.
We finished the week a few minutes ago with a candlelight vigil in our neighbour's front yard, where we prayed, read some scriptue, listened to some uplghting music and read out alond the names of those who died.
Below is an email I sent out Monday night which sums up our feelings:
For those of you in Australia waking up to the devastating news for the USA and especially Virginia,we are several hundred miles away from it all and are fine. But some of my colleagues had a rough day as their children are studying engineering at VTU. All are safe.In the coming days there will be much mourning, sorrow and anger.As you can imagine, the media are having a field day, there is little else on TV. They are not helping the situation.At this time, prayer for this state and this country would be appreciated, as we all deal with this tragedy that has happened so close to home for so many.
